Questions & answers
What is the big tower at your Port Augusta farm?
“That is our state-of-the-art solar tower. It produces energy to power the growing systems and to heat and cool the greenhouses as required. It is 127m high and has over 24,000 mirrors pointed at it. Sorry; we don’t offer trips to the top!”
Where does the water you use come from?
“We utilise seawater from the Spencer Gulf for various purposes. We use the saltwater in both our irrigation and cooling systems. We also take the seas water and remove the salt from it; this is called desalination to supplement our irrigation needs. Our thermal desalination system that is powered by our solar tower.”
What happens to the left-over salt?
“Our thermal desalination system produces both fresh water and water with higher levels of salt. This saltwater is cooled, mixed with seawater, and then returned to the sea once the salt levels have returned to normal.”
