I'll search for information about how to identify practical innovation and entrepreneurship programs in Hong Kong. Based on my research, here are the key ways to identify whether a business program teaches practical innovation and entrepreneurship rather than just theory in Hong Kong:

    Look for These Practical Features:

    1. Hands-On Learning Components

Practical toolkits applicable to corporate and startup businesses, taught through a combination of cross-disciplinary teaching and experiential learning

Entrepreneurial internship courses offering over 480 hours of practicum in real work environments

Bootcamps providing hands-on experience researching and implementing technology-based innovations to implement tech solutions

    2. Real Business Case Studies

Programs that introduce students to practical toolkits applicable to established corporate, social ventures and startup businesses using local and international business cases with insights from hands-on experience

Programs that combine management theories with real-life business cases

    3. Industry Partnerships and Mentorship

Partnerships with local and overseas startups and corporates including names like GoGoX, 9gag, Klook, and OneDegree

Learning from experienced professionals including executives, entrepreneurs, venture capitalists, and businessmen

Required internships, mentorships with corporate advisors, and international exchange opportunities

    4. Business Implementation Opportunities

Programs that allow students to work on and start their own businesses while still studying full time

Business practicum where students work in groups on projects with local businesses

Participation in startup competitions where students pitch ideas to international business experts

    5. Real-World Problem Solving

Programs that match students with real companies to solve authentic business challenges

Ability to apply design thinking to deal with complexity in practical business environments

    Red Flags for Theory-Only Programs:

Be cautious of programs that focus heavily on lectures and exams without these practical elements. Ask programs directly about their internship requirements, industry partnerships, and opportunities for students to launch actual business projects.

“Studying these topics gave me relevant and practical experience and I learned things that I apply in my job every day,” by Varun Sood.

From tech startup opportunities to leading digital transformation, these are the top five MBA jobs in Hong Kong right now

    **1. Sustainbility Consulting**

The Hong Kong government wants to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 and more businesses are prioritizing Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) factors, triggering increased demand for ESG and sustainability consultants in Hong Kong.
Big Three consulting firm McKinsey, for example, launched McKinsey Sustainability last year, a client-service platform focused on helping businesses achieve their climate goals. With offices in Hong Kong, McKinsey is looking for new talent to specialize in sustainability consultancy.

Speaking in a recent BusinessBecause webinar—Jobs in Hong Kong: What You Need to Know—delivered in partnership with Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) Business School, MBA grad Varun Sood (pictured) explains how he’s taken advantage of Hong Kong’s drive towards sustainability goals.
After his MBA at HKUST, he launched a career at PwC as a senior associate within climate and sustainability.

PwC has one of the biggest teams for sustainability consultancy in Hong Kong, which Varun says was a motivating factor for joining the global firm. In the HKUST MBA, Varun studied courses including sustainability as a competitive advantage and ESG investing.
“Studying these topics gave me relevant and practical experience and I learned things that I apply in my job every day,” by Varun Sood, Full-time MBA — Class 2021.

    **2. Project management, digital sector**

Companies in Hong Kong are embracing digital technologies to keep up with the ever-changing business landscape and they’re on the lookout for new hires who can help enhance business productivity using new tech.
“Businesses are looking for people to manage projects and become the bridge between the technical and business teams, building strategy to push for digitization,” explains Christopher Yip (pictured), senior consultant for MBA career and alumni development at HKUST. With HKUST’s focus on business and technology, MBA students are well-equipped to offer this expertise, Christopher believes.
The HKUST MBA offers courses in Technology Entrepreneurship, Transforming Business with Artificial Intelligence, and Strategic Management, preparing students to enter fast-paced careers within digital and project management.

**3. Investment banking & Wealth management**

Investment banking and wealth management divisions across the Asia-Pacific are continuously expanding.

The HKUST MBA provides a series of intensive courses led by internal and external trainers, preparing MBAs to enter top finance jobs across areas like project management, investment banking, insurance, and accounting.
With advantages to living in Hong Kong including legislation that favors free trade and a strong capital inflow particularly due to the proximity with Mainland China, the city is a great place to kickstart your finance career.

    **4. Regtech startup jobs**

The burgeoning regulatory technology, or regtech, sector is predicted to be worth $55 billion by 2025, making it an attractive career route for MBA grads.
Regulation technology startups are devising ways to use computer programs and other technology to help banking and financial companies improve and manage compliance with government regulations.

“With regulation limiting the development of cryptocurrency, startups are building regtech solutions and hiring MBA graduates for these roles. Hong Kong has become a base close to mainland China to develop digital-asset businesses,” explains Christopher.
Business schools like HKUST provide career coaching services to help students pinpoint the skills demanded in these emerging sectors.

“The career coaches help break down your options, providing students with a better understanding of what the job market is like at the time and of Hong Kong as a city,” Varun notes.

**5. MBA jobs in mult-national companies**
While finance is typically the most popular career path for MBA graduates in Hong Kong, Christopher says many HKUST MBA students pursue roles across a range of industries, including energy management and healthcare, within multinational companies.

“Due to the huge international student base at HKUST, multinational companies have been drawn to HKUST graduates as the international backgrounds of talent are an asset to the companies,” says Christopher.
“Many businesses are developing new programs to expand regional business and hiring MBAs to manage this and their marketing strategies.”

89% of HKUST MBA students are from outside Hong Kong. In Hong Kong, the growth of new industries and focus on sustainability and digitalization is creating exciting new job opportunities for MBAs from across the world.
This, Christopher says, makes now the perfect time to take advantage of all that Hong Kong has to offer.

fintech continues to be the leading technology sub-sector
in Hong Kong’s entrepreneur scene, accounting for 465
    of the city’s 3,184 start-ups, according to InvestHK.15 By
contrast, there are 104 smart city and 32 biotech start-
ups. The predominance of fintech is also reflected in our
survey findings, with 76 percent of entrepreneurs and
71 percent of corporates agreeing that Hong Kong is
a fintech innovation hub. However, less than half of
entrepreneurs, students and corporates agree that Hong

A possible way forward, interviewees suggest, could
be establishing a taskforce to work with universities
to create an inventory of projects that could potentially
be commercialised. The taskforce could also connect
universities with private sector companies to help them
take these projects to market, or provide them with further
support to commercialise the research themselves.
Universities could also be more proactive in both

More role models and success stories needed to
    inspire the next generation
Part of the issue is likely to be Hong Kong’s perceived lack
of start-up success stories that would encourage more
young people to start businesses or join existing start-ups.
In this year’s survey, 34 percent of entrepreneurs agree

In order to have the skills needed by start-ups and the
innovation and technology sector more generally, more
students in Hong Kong need to be encouraged to study
STEAM subjects (science, technology, engineering, arts
and maths). However, support for STEAM education is
only part of the solution – enabling companies to create

    …

teachers’ professional development and offering more
support for STEAM in the school system.
    Increasing career development opportunities key
    to supporting STEAM
While schools and universities in Hong Kong already
teach STEAM subjects, students need more help to
see how these subjects can lead to viable career paths.
One option is to increase students’ access to work
    experience, apprenticeships and project-based learning
to give them both first-hand experience of working at a
start-up and help them to build up contacts in this area. In
mid-2020, the Government launched a “STEM Internship
Scheme” in coordination with local universities, which
as of November 2020 had attracted more than 1,200
students to complete internships with over 800 private
and public sector organisations. This is a positive step that
will hopefully encourage students to pursue careers in
STEAM, and could also potentially be expanded in future
years to cover a wider variety of employers and fields.24
Another opportunity in this area is the Technology Leaders
of Tomorrow Programme for science and engineering
graduates launched by HKSTP in July 2020. Under
the scheme, which is being offered through HKSTP’s
InnoAcademy, successful applicants are able to spend 24
months in a full-time R&D role at one of 11 HKSTP partner
companies that are at the pilot stage. They also receive
innovation leadership training, career guidance and take
part in an innovation & technology industry bootcamp.
The scheme aims to enable graduates to experience what
a career at a technology start-up might be like and help
them to develop contacts in the industry.25

    …

the I&T sector, for graduates of Hong Kong universities
to work in the GBA under the Greater Bay Area Youth
Employment Scheme.27 The government’s FinTech Anti-
epidemic Scheme for Talent Development (FAST) scheme
administered by Cyberport has also aimed to support
STEAM graduates by subsiding fintech companies to hire
    local graduates.28
Viable career paths for Hong Kong STEAM graduates are needed, in
addition to more support for STEAM education
Work experience, apprenticeships, and project-based learning help empower a future
workforce and encourage students to study STEAM subjects.

    Suggestions to improve Hong Kong’s
    entrepreneur landscape
    Capturing opportunities for start-ups
to grow and scale in Asia-Pacific
    • Start-ups with products and services that have been proven
to work in Hong Kong should look to capture opportunities
in the rest of the Greater Bay Area (GBA) and Southeast
Asia by seeking out resources and relevant policies

    …

offices and industry support networks that can help to open
    up opportunities for them.
    • Hong Kong students with ambitions to work at start-ups
or in R&D should seek out opportunities to experience
and better understand the rest of the GBA. Three ways
they could explore this would be studying at one of the
mainland China GBA campuses of Hong Kong universities,
exploring internship opportunities in GBA cities, or taking
advantage of the Government’s new Greater Bay Area
    Youth Employment Scheme.
    Fully optimising Hong Kong’s
    technology transfer ecosystem
    • The HKSAR Government should work to develop a more
robust technology transfer infrastructure so that the city’s

    …

    • Policies that aim to reduce waste and carbon emissions
also have great potential to drive entrepreneurship and
new industries. For example, China’s announcement that
it will phase out single-use plastic by 2025 has created
opportunities for start-ups such as EcoInno, a producer of
biodegradable food packaging and utensils, which was one

    …

    • To further support the sector and encourage overseas
biotech start-ups to be based in Hong Kong, the HKSAR
Government should consider creating a regulatory body for
drug registration in Hong Kong and developing more Good
    Manufacturing Practice (GMP) facilities.
    • To provide more viable career paths for STEAM graduates,
the HKSAR Government should increase subsidies and
other incentives to companies to hire STEAM graduates
from local universities, such as those offered under the
FinTech Anti-epidemic Scheme for Talent Development
    (FAST Scheme).

The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects the U.S. economy will add about 5.2 million new jobs from 2024 to 2034. However, while job opportunities are growing, so is the competition to seize them. According to Forbes, “Job requisitions grew by a modest 7%” in 2024, but “applications skyrocketed by 31%, intensifying competition among job seekers.”
In such a competitive market, choosing a degree that aligns with your interests and positions you for career growth in your desired role or industry is crucial. That’s why we developed this guide, which compares 11 types of business degrees to help you make the right decision. It covers key topics like:

    - What types of courses you can expect to study
    - How long do different degrees typically take to complete

    ## What is a Business Degree?

A business degree focuses on topics such as finance, marketing, accounting, economics, entrepreneurship, organizational leadership, and managing teams of employees. While it’s possible to major in business generally, many related majors, such as business administration or international business, offer a more specialized focus.

Depending on the program, a business degree can be offered as an associate’s, bachelor’s, master’s, or doctorate degree. In the next section of this guide, we’ll compare the differences.

    ### What Careers Can You Pursue with a Business Degree?

A business degree opens doors across nearly every sector of the economy. Graduates go on to work in roles such as financial analyst, marketing manager, human resources director, operations manager, supply chain specialist, entrepreneur, and executive leader.

Because business principles apply universally, from healthcare organizations to tech startups to government agencies, the career paths available to business graduates are exceptionally broad. The specific roles you qualify for will depend largely on your chosen specialization and the level of degree you earn, which is why understanding the full range of business programs is such an important first step.

    ## Different Levels of Business Degrees

With some uncommon exceptions like post-baccalaureate programs, most college degrees, including business programs, fall into one of these four categories:

    1. Associate degrees
    2. Bachelor’s degrees
    3. Master’s degrees
    4. Doctorate degrees

Associate’s degrees are the fastest to complete, while doctorate programs are the most advanced and intensive. Doctoral degrees demand the greatest time investment but are also correlated with higher median earnings.
The right option for you depends on your goals and educational background, but no matter which degree you’re pursuing, you’ll find plenty of business-related majors to explore at every level. Whichever level of education you pursue, you will be building and learning valuable skills such as communication and critical thinking.

    > **“Good communication skills are essential across every management level, from associate to doctoral degrees. No matter what stage you’re at, strong communication remains one of the most in-demand and hardest to find skills employers are looking for.”**

    …

    #### Associate Degrees

Students can typically complete associate degree programs in just one to two years. These programs teach fundamental, industry-critical skills, quickly preparing students to start entry-level roles in a specific field or profession.

For example, National University offers the

Associate of Science in Business, which features courses on micro- and macroeconomics, financial and managerial accounting, key legal aspects of business, and marketing fundamentals. Other common associate degrees include the Associate of Business Administration (ABA) and associate degrees in marketing and nonprofit management.

    …

    #### Master’s Degrees

A master’s degree is an advanced credential that typically takes one to two years to complete. Earning this degree can significantly enhance your career prospects, as many employers prefer or even require candidates with this level of education. The Master of Business Administration (MBA) , one of the most in-demand graduate degrees, is a perfect example of a popular master’s degree in business.
While not strictly necessary, it’s advantageous to hold a bachelor’s degree in a related field or subject, since you’ll already be prepared with relevant knowledge of fundamentals. However, even if your undergraduate degree is unrelated to business, you can still enroll in a master’s program if you meet the application criteria.
