TAE Technologies
TAE Technologies is an American nuclear fusion company.
What is fusion energy?
“Fusion is nature’s preferred source of energy. It’s the same process that powers the sun and stars, and it’s what makes life viable on Earth.”
View in the company profileHow do you produce electricity from fusion? How will the power be produced and integrated into the grid?
“In TAE’s future fusion power plant, hydrogen and boron atoms will fuse inside a stable, superhot plasma to produce energetic light. When that light heats the walls of the plasma confinement vessel, a network of pipes will transport that heat via working fluid to a steam generator.”
View in the company profileWhy don’t we have fusion power plants yet? What is the central challenge to producing fusion energy on Earth?
“Terrestrial fusion requires plasma to be confined and maintained at high enough temperature for long enough time—the Hot Enough/Long Enough (HE/LE) requirement. “Hot Enough” means ≥100 million °C, which is achievable. “Long Enough” is the challenge, because plasma loses heat rapidly to its surroundings. A commercial fusion machine must minimize that loss to achieve net energy gain.”
View in the company profileWhat is plasma?
“Plasma is the fourth state of matter. When gas is superheated, electrons break free from atoms, creating a soup of positively charged ions and negatively charged electrons—this is plasma.”
View in the company profileWhy has there been a recent proliferation of private fusion companies?
“New clean‑energy urgency combined with breakthroughs in enabling technologies (ML, superconductors, etc.) have drawn investment and sparked global private fusion efforts.”
