What should you do when AI recommends another business?
Read the complete answer and its sources before deciding what to change. Check whether the question describes a need you serve, whether the answer represents your offering accurately, and whether it recommends another option or merely mentions it. Then choose the smallest evidence-backed improvement, record the page and buyer question it addresses, and agree what you will review next. A competitor appearing in one answer does not identify the cause or justify rewriting the whole website.

Check whether the question fits your offering
A buyer may ask for a feature, location, delivery model or use case your business does not provide. Another option may then fit better. Preserve that constraint when reading the result. Changing the question simply to force your inclusion would conceal the product-fit issue.

Read the recommendation in context
A list can mention several businesses without recommending any of them. A conditional suggestion can be useful even if the product is not described as the first choice. In supplied Hong Kong observations for Hada Labo, answers to a face-moisturizer question capped at HK$300 included it as a budget option. On humid-weather and air-conditioned-office questions, responses differed: some suggested alternatives, while one office-related answer cited a Hada Labo product page without naming the brand. These are observations tied to different needs, not a single verdict about the brand.
A separate set of supplied Hong Kong observations shows why citations need their own label: an answer cited a Bioderma page without naming the brand. Record that as a citation, not as a brand mention or recommendation. Keep the complete answer beside the cited URL so the team can see what the source supports and whether the brand was actually recommended.
For each question, compare the need, the exact wording, whether the answer mentions or recommends an option, the source it uses and any qualifications. A source link is useful visibility evidence, but does not by itself show that the source drove the recommendation. Keep conditions about team size, integrations or operating needs too; they explain the decision the answer is making.

| Observation | Inspect | Improve |
|---|---|---|
| The offering is described incorrectly. | Retained wording and cited product information. | Correct unclear or outdated facts on pages you control. |
| A needed capability is unexplained. | Product details and supporting sources. | Add a precise description, conditions and worked use case. |
| A cited source is incomplete. | What it actually says about the product. | Improve your source; request factual corrections elsewhere when appropriate. |
| Useful information is hard to reach. | Navigation, public access and page response. | Make the page accessible and link it in context. |
| The question asks for an unsupported need. | Buyer constraints and the actual offering. | Explain fit honestly; do not invent a capability. |
| No answer completed. | The missing observation and disclosed failure. | Resolve incomplete evidence before interpreting absence. |

A worked example of a page improvement
Consider a hypothetical agency page that describes its offer only as “website strategy, design and development”. A mid-sized B2B buyer still needs to know what that includes. If the agency provides these services, the page can explain how discovery, design and development fit together, which platform it builds on, what the client team can manage after launch, and whether migration, CRM integrations and ongoing support are in scope. It can also point to comparable work the buyer can review, without implying that another client’s results will repeat. If any part is outside scope, say so clearly.
For an ecommerce redesign brief, make the decision criteria just as concrete: the required platform, the research informing the redesign, who will implement changes, and whether ongoing conversion-rate optimisation includes experimentation after launch. When shortlisting agencies, ask for platform-specific examples and clarify who owns implementation, testing and post-launch learning. Separate the redesign deliverables from the ongoing testing programme, and agree what evidence would help you assess the work. This makes it easier to compare scope and decide what to verify before appointing a partner.
For a growing business evaluating integrated paid search, paid social and lead generation, an agency page can clarify which channels it manages and whether creative, landing pages and campaign optimisation are included. It can also explain how it defines a qualified lead, whether campaign activity can be reviewed alongside CRM outcomes, and what comparable work a buyer can examine. The buyer can then ask for relevant examples and a clear account of how performance is reported, rather than relying on broad claims about results.
These are content examples, not captured AI answers or claims about an agency’s results. The improvement is clearer fit, delivery scope and evidence for the buying decision.

Repair information in its canonical home
For Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet to qualify as a supporting link. Google says there are no additional technical requirements. Separately, its generative AI guidance says a site must be included in Search Console’s generative AI features to be eligible for display. Eligibility does not guarantee that a page will appear.
Keep important content crawlable, easy to find through internal links and available in text. If you use structured data, make sure it matches the visible page. These checks help make your canonical information accessible and clear, but they cannot explain why a particular answer preferred another option.

Use guidance for the relevant platform
For Google’s AI features, use the relevant Search Console reports to understand visibility on Google’s surface. Google says AI feature traffic is included in the overall Web performance report, and its Generative AI performance report provides a view of performance in generative AI features. These reports do not measure visibility across every AI system, so keep observations from other platforms separate.
Treat visibility and business impact as different reporting questions. A mention, citation or recommendation is not evidence of a referral, lead or sale. Review referral and CRM outcomes separately when available, and keep the buyer question and observation context with the report so the team knows what the visibility data represents.

Finish a useful action
Choose the smallest change that addresses a verified gap: clarify who the offering is for, add supported service detail, make a relevant page easier to find, or correct information you control. Prioritize changes by their relevance to a real buying decision and your ability to substantiate and maintain them. For client work, record the buyer question, complete answer and sources, the gap, the page owner, the change, and the date. Agree in advance what would count as a useful follow-up observation, so the client team can assess the work against the original issue rather than a vague visibility target.
When reviewing visibility again, use the same buyer questions, AI system and relevant settings where possible, and retain complete answers and sources. Treat a changed question, system or setup as a separate observation. Individual outputs can vary, so compare patterns across repeated checks before prioritizing a change. Mentions and recommendations are visibility evidence, not proof of leads or revenue. Review referral and CRM outcomes separately when available. The goal is to improve information customers can use, not create a recurring task to monitor rival brands.
